Case study: Water control solutions for smart and sustainable living

Client

A multinational manufacturer of piping systems

Project: Empowering a new era of smart water control

The client is a multinational corporation primarily known as a provider of piping systems for the safe transportation of liquids and gases.

The client collaborated with HTEC to create an Internet of Things (IoT)- based system that would provide a higher degree of control and management in their piping systems.

This initial project led to a long-term collaboration during which HTEC helped create innovative solutions, empowering a new digital-driven era of water control and management.

Challenge: Providing the digital dimension for a modern piping system

The technological rise of IoT created unprecedented possibilities for the control and management of industrial systems. The client wanted to exploit this potential by creating a modern, fast, and reliable IoT system to enable clean, safe, and efficient water movement through pipes.

HTEC’s collaboration with the client unfolded across multiple projects requiring broad expertise. In addition to understanding a complex and highly specialized domain, the scope of work involved sophisticated technological services combining IoT, data engineering, cloud technologies, DevOps, and firmware.

“The breadth of technological services we provided throughout this collaboration truly encapsulates the essence of HTEC. Regardless of the complexity of the domain or the degree of technical difficulty, we are problem solvers at heart. Technical expertise is a given, but our ability to look beyond what we are tasked with and understand the needs of our clients enables us to provide value where it is needed”.

Milan Ačanski, senior engineering and delivery lead at HTEC

Solution: Extensive digitalization of water control systems

In the initial collaboration stage, HTEC focused on developing a comprehensive IoT system. The complex system involved many sensors and actuators to control the movement, temperature, and cleanliness of water in a piping system. Through its combined expertise in software engineering and embedded technologies, HTEC’s team created a system to enable:

  • Smart actuation of valves
  • Water flow regulation
  • Management of valves
  • Redirection of water in the pipes

They also developed an application that provides technicians with remote data tracking and data analytics for the piping system.

After the success of the initial IoT-powered piping system project, the client extended the collaboration with HTEC through a string of projects across its business operations. Throughout the engagement, HTEC helped create the following:

Automated water distribution system for residential buildings

Development of an automation system for precision water control (temperature pressure, quality, etc.) in domestic installations. The system oversees and controls the consistent distribution of water flows and temperatures across the building, reducing energy consumption. In this project, HTEC handled the system’s programming, including firmware and hardware.

Cloud-based monitoring

Development of a user-facing, cloud-based solution enabling remote digital monitoring of water installations. The solution enabled the users to control system settings remotely via a web portal.

Central database

Development of a core informational base gathering and processing data from all the client’s data sources. The database gathers and transforms the client’s product data and delivers it on request to user-facing points via an API. The HTEC team handled the entire data architecture and programming for all APIs and the database migration from an on-premise solution to the cloud.

Success: Re-defining the water control playbook

Through its collaboration with the client, HTEC implemented various modern digital solutions for water management, enabling the client to evolve with the times and maintain a strong market presence. Furthermore, HTEC’s work has enabled the client to enter new domains by developing solutions applicable to industrial systems, residential areas, large medical and hospitality facilities, and beyond.

Major technological advances are fueling the digital transformation of traditional industries, and HTEC is at the forefront of the technological revolution.
