Case Study: Building a Customizable System for Managing Injection Protocols

Building a customizable system for managing injection protocols HTEC Group

About the project

A renowned innovation company with a rich history in the fields of agriculture, pharmacy, and healthcare, is committed to enhancing the quality of life. Their substantial presence in radiology is marked by the extensive utilization of their products and solutions.

Momentum, an HTEC Group company, was engaged by this client to collaborate on the development of radiology software. This involved creating a suite of applications for efficient management and application of CT and MRI injection protocols.

Challenge

Momentum worked with the client on three projects:

  • Protocol Management, which would house all protocols used for patients undergoing a CT/MRI scan
  • CT/MRI fluid injector software
  • The launch pad for all radiology applications

Throughout the projects, they faced a series of challenges that centered on comprehending the intricate aspects of radiology, adapting to diverse user needs and work settings, and constructing a versatile system capable of customization and future feature integration, even when those features have not been clearly defined.

Protocol Management

To grasp the essence of the CPM, Momentum organized a workshop with the client, where they delved into the functionalities and information within a protocol. Given the critical nature of any omissions for patient safety, they aimed for comprehensive coverage. Armed with insights gained from the workshop, they sketched out their concepts and meticulously designed each step and element to accommodate the varying complexities of protocols.

CPM would eventually house a multitude of hospital protocols, requiring an efficient user interface. To help users in locate the required protocols, they incorporated a subheader equipped with search and sorting options.

Protocol Publication: Assigning protocols to specific scanners was a requisite step for their usage. They devised a scalable matrix that could adapt to a hospital’s unique circumstances in terms of the number of protocols and scanners.

Having worked out all the functionality in the wireframes, Momentum applied visual design, adhering to the client’s brand guidelines while tailoring it to meet the diverse needs of different users.

The implementation of the design into a functional application was carried out using Ext.js, with close collaboration between the designer and developer to ensure a seamless process.

Visual Design

Momentum was also tasked to help with the software for the hardware that injected the CT/MRI fluid into the patient. The client already had the functionality but needed help with the look and feel. In the visual design phase, Momentum created two concepts, each with light and dark themes, which were later combined into a final visual design.

The launch pad for all radiology applications

After establishing the core functionality of the launch pad, Momentum started redesigning the application that would serve as the primary site for all employees. They began by categorizing the app into discrete sections and identified four distinct user roles, each with their own set of requirements and permissions. Then, Momentum created wireframes that illustrated the default states for these four roles and the necessary applications.

Modular System: Momentum developed a versatile and modular system to accommodate an extensive array of applications with varying complexities, making sure that the launch pad remains both customizable and user-friendly.

Unobtrusive design: Bearing in mind that this solution had to seamlessly integrate with various applications, potentially from third-party sources, Momentum adopted an unobtrusive design approach.

Success

In collaboration with the client, Momentum successfully developed two sizable and intricate applications, along with crafting a visual design for the client’s injector software. Despite the intricacies of the radiology domain, the team established a close partnership with the client, ensuring a comprehensive grasp of user requirements and nuances in their designs. The ultimate outcomes were applications that not only met functional requirements but also excelled in terms of user-friendliness, workflow guidance, and adaptability to diverse environments.
